Becoming a fish

Lucy’s been afraid of swimming pools and oceans for most of her life. As of a few months ago she’s found enthusiasm for swimming and bravery to face her fear. We went to a hotel on the beach this weekend and she’s practicing! There’s a guy nearby throwing his kids in the pool, and they laugh unencumbered laughs while begging, “again, daddy, again, please, daddy, please!”

Scared of what?

“I’m scared of something and I don’t know what I’m scared of and I’m scared of not knowing,” says Lucy, 5 1/2 years old.

When I was a kid I was afraid of the dark and afraid of whatever lived (according to my imagination) in the trees near our house.

I’m still afraid of the dark and also afraid of the political and environmental state of the world.  Maybe that’s what Lucy doesn’t know yet.
