Walking with my grandma is similar to walking with Lucy who wants to touch and comment on everything on the sidewalk – only Lucy is 3 and fast and my grandma is 95 and slow and has a walker.

On our 1/2hour 4 block walk I noticed

• rose bushes starting to leaf out
• gravel on sidewalks that had been kicked up there by cars
• tentative quiet dogs staring from behind fences
• newspapers not yet retrieved
• shades and curtains in windows
• blackberry bushes creeping onto the sidewalk
• cracks and divets and bumps
• branches that need to be trimmed
• a dead-end street
• a path through an area with no houses
• basketball hoops in almost every driveway or yard
• complete play structures in backyards
• large cars parked in driveways
• where are all the people?

She said that nobody wants to walk with her anymore because she walks so slowly.  It was the first time she’d been out for a walk in months.

Realistically I probably wouldn’t have the time in my usual daily life for a short leisurely stroll with her, but I wish I would.

I always walk quickly, hurry, hurry, “catch up to me, Lucy, hurry up.”
