Managing the sidewalk up and down

Today I walked home with my head down for most of the walk. This morning I was heckled a few times (followed for a half block, “hey pretty lady” and the like yelled after me – really, I’m pretty, but not that pretty, and I don’t think I’ve got any come-hither-thing happening when I’m bundled up in wool coat and scarf and hat) and this evening I was heckled again a couple blocks into my walk home so I tucked my head down. When I was a block from home I finally looked up and realized I’d missed The Sunset Happening. Icy blues and oranges and pinks and reds and a mostly clear sky. Awwwww.

Note: Heckling, to me, isn’t the same as requests, soft loud obnoxious however, for food/money/etc. Heckling is when someone’s trying to harrass me into responding or engaging.

Stroller View

My wife and I almost always walk with our daughter to/from preschool. It’s about a mile walk, mostly on Market Street in San Francisco from Guerrero to Polk. Sometimes we take the subway or streetcar, sometimes we drive, but usually we walk. She sits in her stroller with assorted books or toys, or she rides on my back in an ergo-carrier. On one recent day she took her camera (Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera) in the stroller and photographed the variety of moving and still life that is a part of our daily walk. I think her stroller perspective photos are amazing.

Fogstorm

Part of my usual weekday walk involves Market Street between Van Ness and 8th. There’s a wind tunnel there that is particularly brisk and bright during a fogstorm. This morning’s fogstorm inspired buttoning up my thin suit jacket, walking as briskly as I can, dodging tourists clumped outside the Ramada, skimming through people waiting for bus to take them to CalTrain, and stomping down 8th in a rush to get out of the wind. There’s almost always sunshine on Folsom with the people and waterhoses cleaning the sidewalk.
