The Preschooler Remembered

This morning we took the F market without any complaint from Lucy about wanting to take the underground. She remembered. She’ll never be President.

mobilely useful

I’m walking home on Folsom street and 2 women ask me if I know where the Harbor Lights AA meeting is. Never heard of it but I have my Treo and internet access. Two minutes for a web search and I have the address they need. Feeling so useful!

Walking in Circles

This morning Lucy and I walked to the F market, waited, then she requested the underground so we walked 3 blocks to the underground (basically circling our house). When we rode the escalator back up to the street at Civic Center and walked to her preschool, she said, “this a longer walk than the F.” Tomorrow, she promised, she’d just keep waiting for the F. We’ll see. Promises by preschoolers, and U.S. presidents and presidential candidates, are often forgotten and later denied.

Help your users feel smart

Users of web sites, web applications, software, gadgets, and so on, do not really want to read your FAQ or go on your tour, or watch your video of how to use your web site, or contact your customer service.  They want to figure out how to use it by using it.  Going to the help section or reading a FAQ makes some people feel stupid.  Make your users smart.  Make your design obvious and easy so they can figure out how to use it and return to your site without trepidation.
